We’ve all been there…

You’ve booked your session—and now you’re wondering what’s next. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Having your photos taken is a treat. It’s not something we do every day, which makes it both exciting and (let’s be honest) a little nerve-wracking. Between planning outfits, crossing your fingers for good weather, and hoping no one comes down with a cold, it can feel like a lot.

And then there’s the big question: what do I even do with my hands?! Or maybe you’ve got a little one who refuses to say “cheese.”

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to have it all figured out—that’s what I’m here for. You’re in good hands, and I’ve gathered my top tips to help ease the stress and make your session fun, relaxed, and memorable.

I’ve got 9 simple ways to make your time in front of the camera feel like a breeze!

1. Collaborate with me.

Have a vision? Let’s hear it! Bring your ideas, location dreams, even that Pinterest board you’ve been curating. While I won’t copy another artist’s work verbatim (out of respect for their craft and mine), I love to see what inspires you. Remember: you're hiring me for my eye and style—but your input helps shape the magic we’ll create together.

2. Perfect timing matters.

Trust me on the time of day—light is everything. Once I know your vision and location, I’ll recommend the best time to capture the mood you’re after.

3. Arrive 10–15 minutes early.

When we set a time, that’s when the session begins. Arriving early prevents feeling rushed, protects your camera time, and gives us a few extra minutes to get comfortable and connect. A relaxed vibe = the best photos.

4. Eat and hydrate.

Full bellies = happy humans. This goes for kids and adults. Hungry, dehydrated people don't love being photographed—trust me. Have snacks and drinks on the way, especially for the little ones.

5. Get hyped!

Music changes everything. Play your favorite songs on the drive over—the ones that make you feel good, confident, and alive. Bonus points if you create a little playlist for your session. It sets the tone and loosens everyone up.

6. Leave the pressure behind.

I’m one of the most laid-back people you’ll meet. I have five kids—I know chaos. I know the car ride over might be stressful or loud. But once you arrive, take a breath and let it go. There’s no pressure here. No need for perfect behavior—just be present.

7. Get love on the brain.

It might sound cheesy, but stay with me: your session is about love. Whether it's a family, maternity, or couples shoot—this is about showing up for each other. Let the love, the laughter, and the connection lead. That’s where the real story lives.

8. Follow my lead.

One of my favorite parts of photography is getting to know you. I pay attention to how you interact—your quirks, your humor, your vibe—and I guide the session to bring all of that out. Trust me to prompt and direct while keeping things natural and true to you.

9. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Got an idea mid-session? Tell me! As long as it’s safe and reasonable, I’m totally game. Some of the best shots come from spontaneous suggestions—and even the “fails” can be fun.
